Chalmers turns to Reddit to fix the economy
‘Hey everybody, I’m just curious about how we can increase productivity and help the economy in this country? Anyone got any ideas?’
In a sign of difficult times, our top secret spy Gennady can report that this week the treasurer Jim Chalmers turned to Reddit for answers.
Writing under the alias SerialChalmer78, the man charged with controlling the nation’s budget took to this famously raucous internet forum and echo chamber in the hope of finding answers.
Posting in the r/Australia forum, the treasurer was soon greeted by several replies of varying degrees of helpfulness.
BigTimmy69: I have no idea but I’m sure I could do a better job than that waste of space Chalmers.
MadMax: As a lifelong Labor voter, my conscience can no longer stomach voting for them. I’m voting Greens this time round, because they have amazing fiscal policies like taxing billionaires, getting rid of CGT/Negative gearing, removing the independence of the RBA, implementing nationwide rental freezes, abolishing HECS, and introducing the Zimbabwean ZiG as the nation’s default currency. This could all be achieved in a single term if only the electorate weren’t so stupid.
RuckMasterMassivePo: We need serious structural changes to strengthen the economy. Major tax reform should be a key area of focus to combat growing intergenerational inequity. Substantial action is required on how resources are taxed in Australia. In terms of productivity small businesses need greater support along with more investment in R&D.
SmartSpender: We have the best opportunity for tax reform in a generation. There needs to be a restoration of the idea that hard work translates into financial security, with a rebalanced tax system that ensures the prosperity of future generations.
‘Maybe I’ll try X instead,’ Jim was heard remarking to himself.
