Jim Chalmers breaks into impromptu rendition of ‘Ombra mai fu’ during question time

Continuing in the recent trend of politicians spontaneously breaking out into song, today Jim Chalmers gave a rendition most at odds with previous performances.

Confidently striding to the Table during question time, the member for Rankin proceeded to respond to a query about inflation in the most peculiar fashion.

Upon receiving the question, he gazed wistfully off into the distance, to a scene somewhere afar currently taking place in his mind:

‘I’ve been thinking a lot recently about this Queensland bottle tree near my house. It is so beautiful, so symmetrical. I’ve spent many hours admiring the way the shade is cast by its leaves. Often during storms my mind shifts toward its existence, and when the storm passes I’ll go and check to see that it’s okay.’

There haven’t been many occasions, when almost everybody in attendance from the floor to the press gallery, and on either side of the aisle, had exclusively quizzical expressions towards what was taking place.

Oblivious to such confusion around him, Chalmers transformed them all once more, as he proceeded with a deep voice to start to sing Handel’s classic.

‘OOOOOoooombra maiiii fu….’

Silence and shock settled when he concluded, so much so no one even recalled what the original question was.

‘Anyway, here’s Wonderwall!’ chimed in Tim Wilson to death stares from everyone present.
